Driving on the highway at night can be very dangerous if you are not aware of the rules and not familiar with the road situations. Especially truck drivers, to them it’s a job and most of the time they are on the road with duty. They pretty much need knowledge on how to get the work done perfectly and safely, particularly when at night on the highway. Following will be some tips to equip you with a safe driving habit.

1. Selectively use the high beam. Since there are no lamps on the highway, many drivers will keep turning the high beams on for long time. Although on the highway there are isolation strips, the high beams still stimulate the eyes, quickly get the eyes into fatigue and cause illusions. So, exchange the lights according to different circumstances rather than keep the high beams on for long night.

2.Maintain a longer distance between vehicles. Driving on the highway at night, the driver has a view narrower and reacts more slowly than on the day when encountered with unexpected situations. On the highway can be seen many trucks whose signal lights usually shaded by stains. This leads no ways to judge the distance between the vehicles. So, keep a greater distance from the vehicles (at least 200-300 meters away) at night than during the day.

3.Overtake at the appropriate time. Overtake within an visible range when the road is relatively wide. Before overtaking, you should observe if there is an obstacle on the right of the front vehicle so as to avoid a collision with the obstacle when overtaking. Also, you should alternate the high-low beams to send prior notice to the vehicle ahead and wait 3-5 seconds after the indicator works. Leave the passing lane as soon as possible after overtaking.

4. Do not take up the emergency lane on the highway at night. Some drivers will pull off and take rests in the emergency lane when they are tired.  This is rather dangerous, and also impede the aid vehicles of timely arriving at the scene. Only under emergencies, can law enforcement, fire fighting, ambulance and engineering rescue vehicles use the emergency lane.

5. Do not drive when you are in fatigue. Driving at night on the highway for a long time, the driver can easily become fatigued. Keep the car inside ventilated, restrain drowsiness and fatigue, and try to regain strength and energy. If you feel very tired, stop the vehicle at the highway service area to take a good rest.
